History and Description of Area

Bitton House is a Grade II listed Georgian townhouse situated in the heart of Teignmouth, Devon. Built in the late 18th century, this elegant property served as a private residence for wealthy families before later becoming a civic building.

The house features classic Georgian architecture with high ceilings, ornate fireplaces, and period details throughout. Today it functions as a venue and community space, retaining much of its original character across multiple floors including grand parlour rooms, a formal Mayors Parlour, and a network of upstairs offices and corridors.

During our investigation we were granted full access to all areas including Parlour 1, Parlour 2, the Mayors Parlour, and the upstairs office corridor with its vestibule area and locked door at the far end. The building's layout—with its interconnected rooms, narrow corridors, and original features—creates an atmospheric setting well-suited to paranormal investigation.

The property's long history as both a private home and public building has witnessed generations of occupants, staff, and visitors—layers of human experience that, according to our investigation, appear to linger still.

Reported Possible Activity

Bitton House has not been widely investigated by paranormal teams and limited information is available regarding prior reported phenomena. As a working civic venue with regular public use, activity may go undocumented or unreported by staff and visitors.

DCPI's investigation aimed to establish baseline findings for this location.

Bitton House, Teignmouth - Public Event - 31/05/2025

Arrival & First Impressions

Team A (Ros & Ian) arrived with guests Jo, Jo's partner, Shelley, Kai, Jade, Nathan, and Courtney. The team set up across multiple areas of the historic building, beginning investigations in Parlour 1 before moving through the venue.

Vigil One – Parlour 1

Human Pendulum

Brandon took position in the centre of the circle, followed by Zoe.

(Full write-up for pendulum session available on Google Drive.)

Vigil Two – Mayors Parlour

Group Séance

All guests seated around the table. Ros explained the séance process and asked if guests were happy for Ros and Ian to join to provide additional energy—all agreed.

With fingers on the table, we began asking spirit to come forward. Nathan reported hearing movement behind him despite everyone being seated. We asked spirit to copy—Ros knocked three times and received one very faint knock in response.

We then encouraged spirit to move the table. Both tables began to vibrate. As two separate tables sat adjacent, we moved them slightly apart to ensure one wasn't affecting the other. Both continued vibrating independently. The vibration intensified—Jade asked about a scratching noise, which Ros identified as her fingernails scratching the tabletop as it moved beneath her hands.

The vibration grew stronger, died off, then strengthened again before ceasing after approximately ten minutes. This was impressive given the tables were very heavy and difficult to move.

Estes Method – Shelley

Shelley volunteered first. Initially quiet, she suddenly began speaking—describing a frightened female spirit. She shouted "BANG" loudly and slammed her hand on the table, startling everyone. She then began saying "leave, get out, go now" whilst pointing directly at the exit door—despite being fully blindfolded with heavily padded eye covers.

She continued: "You need to leave. Danger." Another bang on the table. When asked why she was desperate for us to leave, she said "man, he is here, over there" and pointed toward Nathan. She then said "knife, blood, lots of blood, footsteps"—at the exact moment she said "footsteps," Nathan reported hearing footsteps directly behind his chair and turned to check.

Shelley continued referencing knives, blood, danger, an angry man, and hatred. Ros tapped her out due to the distressing content.

Estes Method – Jade

Jade received only a couple of words over ten minutes—none relevant or coherent. Tapped out.

Estes Method – Nathan

Nathan received some words but nothing relevant or deducible. Tapped out after ten minutes.

All participants reported finding it bizarre that they couldn't remember anything—Shelley had no recollection of banging on the table or pointing, and none remembered the words they spoke.

Break taken.

Vigil Three – Parlours 1 & 2 (Combined)

The divider doors between Parlours 1 and 2 were opened to create one large area. Both teams merged and guests chose their preferred activity.

Andrew conducted independent thermal imaging experiments, capturing severe temperature fluctuations across all areas and a line of light that shot from the ceiling, off a guest's back, and toward the floor.

Glasswork

Nathan, Jo, Jo's partner, and Kai participated initially.

Spirit came through quickly—female, worked at the venue, happy we were communicating. A male spirit followed, appearing very angry, moving the glass rapidly in circles without responding to questions. The glass movement intensified with this spirit.

Multiple spirits communicated throughout, making it difficult to track who we were speaking with at any time.

Jo's partner, Jo, Shelley, and Jade then joined the table. Response came quickly—spirit indicated female, then male, drawn to someone at the table (indicated Jade), but questions yielded no coherent answers.

Another spirit came through with very erratic movement—constant circling of the table whilst carefully avoiding the edges. It answered some questions with sudden quick movements to yes or no between circles. We deduced this was the angry man again, though he appeared less angry and more strong.

Ros initiated a game: she commanded "STOP" and the glass instantly stopped. She said "move again" and it resumed tentatively, with slower movements. This pattern repeated—spirit seemed to enjoy the game. Then the glass stopped completely. Ros said "move the glass one more time"—nothing. She said "oh alright, don't then"—and it moved. The spirit appeared to be playing games in return.

Further questions yielded no movement. As we prepared to end, the cat ball inside the glass moved whilst the glass itself remained stationary—guests were amazed but spirit only did this once.

A cat ball placed approximately 4 feet away by the fireplace activated several times during the vigil—but only when no one was looking or paying it attention.

Vigil Four – Upstairs Area

We proceeded to the top of the stairs, turning right through a door into a corridor of office rooms and a small kitchen area. At the corridor's end was a closed, locked door and a small vestibule area around the corner with stacked chairs and a table.

Frankie the motion sensor robot was placed on the landing facing the stairs. Cat balls and K2 meters positioned throughout the corridor.

We began calling out, asking spirit to copy taps on the wall. One very faint tap was heard in response—then Frankie began beeping on the landing, indicating movement in front of him. As he faced the stairs, we deduced spirit may have come up from below. Frankie activated three times then stopped for the remainder of the session.

Calling out continued without response. All guests reported feeling different upstairs—the atmosphere had changed, feeling darker, more oppressive, and making them nervous.

Estes Method – Kai

Words received: "People," "alright," "I would be," "I just feel like something"—then silence—followed by "Robert," "my boss," "seven," "people" (there were eight of us present). No further information obtained.

Estes Method – Jo

Spirit came through almost immediately. Jo began making strange noises—attempting to sing but producing "oooohs" and "aaaaahs" and ineligible words, prompting laughter from guests.

Key exchanges:

  • "Memory"—asked about it but no answer

  • Jo giggled like a child

  • "Gently"

  • "Ooooh I can hear you"

  • "I will try"

  • "I can be"

  • "I walk the floor"

  • "Oh Hannah"—guests laughed, referencing Lilo and Stitch

  • "Oh Haaannaaah"

  • "Family"

  • "Skip skip skip"

  • "Ooooh I don't know"

  • "Haaaaaalaaaa"

  • Jo pointed to the end of the corridor: "Over there"

  • "I'm waving"—we all waved back and said hello

  • "Moooornin"—guests laughed, Jo giggled like a child

  • "I don't like him"—Jo began sounding scared

  • "No, him up there, right up there, don't like him"

  • "I'm frightened"

  • "I'm scared, help me"

  • "I don't like him"

  • "We need to run"

  • "Run"

  • "Where's Hannah, Hannah, Hannah"

  • "Run"

  • Jo began panting: "He'll hurt us"

  • "Mummy"

  • "Don't let him hurt me mummy"

  • "Ssssshhhhh"

  • "Friends"—"yes we are all friends"—childlike giggle

  • "You are funny"

  • "Lock him, lock him in"

  • "Lock him in friends"

  • "In the fire"

  • "He buries it there"

  • "In the fire"

  • "In that place"

  • "In here"

  • "Downstairs"

  • "He took my hammer"—hammer and dagger were mentioned in Shelley's earlier Estes session in the Mayors Parlour, along with "fireplace"

  • "Alan, Alan"

  • "Where's Alan, where's Alan"

  • "Neighbourly"

  • "Ridiculous man"

  • "Aha"

  • "He made me nervous"

  • "He was ridiculous"

Jo's breathing became heavier. Ros tapped her out and Jo screamed, startling everyone. Jo reported speaking with a lady who was "so clear."

Estes Method – Jade

All was quiet initially, but activity began in the corridor. Guests observed black shadow figures moving at the end of the corridor—walking in and out of the vestibule area. Black feet were seen walking past the locked door, visible in the gap between door and floor. Guests seated closer to that end reported hearing footsteps and movement.

Shelley suggested investigating but wouldn't go alone—no one was brave enough to accompany her. Ros and Shelley eventually went to the corridor's end; all fell quiet and the movement ceased. Guests could no longer see feet passing behind the door.

Whilst Ros and Shelley were at the corridor's end, Jade suddenly began speaking:

  • "Hello"

  • "Who are you" (uncertain)

  • "Ooooh no"—then silence

  • Jo asked if spirit was watching; Jade said "whisper"—Jo apologised and whispered

  • "Broken"

  • "Medical"

  • "Drs"

  • "Pushed"

No further responses. Jade tapped out.

Vigil Five – Guests' Choice

Some guests requested Estes; others went to the Mayors Parlour.

Estes was set up in Parlour 1 with participants seated in a circle. Team members and staff took turns with guests' blessing. Some received words; others did not.

Communication Experiments

Human Pendulum (Parlour 1)
Two extensive sessions conducted with Brandon and Zoe as pendulum subjects. Multiple spirits communicated including a female worker from around 1904 who was mistreated by her boss (a bad man who killed someone and was imprisoned), an angry chef who accidentally poisoned someone with bad meat, the poisoned woman herself (brought to the area after a shipwreck), a Jack Russell called Monty connected to guest Zoe, and Tilly—a woman in her twenties who died by suicide after losing her husband. Physical phenomena included guests' hands lifting involuntarily, hair movement, hot hands, and Zoe becoming extremely cold. Session ended when spirits confirmed they meant us harm.

Séance (Mayors Parlour)
Table vibration achieved across two separate heavy tables simultaneously for approximately ten minutes. One faint knock received in response to copy request.

Glasswork (Parlours 1 & 2)
Highly active session with multiple spirits communicating including a female who worked at the venue and an angry male spirit. Intelligent responses received. Cat ball inside glass moved independently of glass. Responsive to verbal commands—stopped and started on instruction. Evidence of spirit "playing games" with investigators. Cat ball by fireplace activated only when not being observed.

Estes Method (Multiple Locations)
Multiple sessions conducted throughout the evening. Most significant sessions:

  • Shelley (Mayors Parlour) – Distressing warnings of danger from a frightened female spirit. Referenced an angry man, knife, blood, and repeatedly urged us to leave. Pointed accurately at door and toward Nathan whilst fully blindfolded. "Footsteps" spoken at exact moment Nathan heard footsteps behind him.

  • Jo (Upstairs Corridor) – Extended communication with a childlike spirit frightened of a man in the kitchen area. Playful initially (skipping, giggling, singing) before becoming terrified. Referenced Hannah, fire, something buried, a hammer being taken, and someone called Alan. Desperately wanted the man locked in.

  • Jade (Upstairs Corridor) – Words received included "broken," "medical," "pushed." Session coincided with shadow figures and feet observed moving in the corridor.

  • Kai (Upstairs Corridor) – Words received included "people," "Robert," "my boss," "seven."

Environmental & Physical Effects

Shelley:

  • Banged hand on table twice during Estes (no memory of doing so)

  • Pointed directly at exit door and toward Nathan whilst fully blindfolded

  • No memory of words spoken or actions taken during Estes

Nathan:

  • Heard movement behind him during séance—no one present

  • Heard footsteps behind his chair simultaneously with Shelley saying "footsteps"

Jo:

  • Extended Estes communication with childlike spirit

  • Breathing became heavy during session

  • Screamed upon being tapped out

  • Reported spirit was "so clear"

Jade:

  • No memory of words spoken during Estes

Nathan (Estes):

  • No memory of words spoken during Estes

All Estes Participants:

  • Reported finding it bizarre they couldn't remember anything from their sessions

Equipment & Atmosphere

  • Both séance tables vibrated simultaneously for approximately ten minutes

  • Frankie motion sensor activated three times on landing—facing stairs, suggesting spirit ascended from below

  • Cat ball by fireplace activated several times—only when not being observed

  • Cat ball inside glass moved whilst glass remained stationary

  • Andrew captured severe temperature fluctuations on thermal imaging across all areas

  • Andrew captured line of light shooting from ceiling, off guest's back, toward floor

  • Guests reported upstairs atmosphere felt different—darker, more oppressive, inducing nervousness

  • Shadow figures observed moving at end of upstairs corridor

  • Black feet seen walking past locked door (visible in gap beneath door)

  • Activity ceased when investigators approached vestibule area

Conclusion

A highly active investigation at Bitton House yielding extensive spirit communication and corroborated phenomena across multiple floors.

Notable Spirit Contacts:

The Warning Woman – Female spirit communicating through Shelley during Estes. Frightened and desperate to warn us of danger. Referenced an angry man with a knife, blood, and urged us repeatedly to leave. Her warnings coincided precisely with Nathan hearing footsteps behind him.

The Angry Man – Male spirit encountered during glasswork. Initially aggressive with erratic, rapid glass movement. Appeared strong rather than hostile upon further communication. Responded to commands and appeared to enjoy playing stop/start games with investigators.

The Child Spirit (Hannah?) – Childlike female spirit communicating through Jo during Estes. Playful initially—skipping, giggling, singing. Became frightened when referencing a man "up there" in the kitchen area. Desperately wanted him locked in. Referenced fire, a buried hammer, and someone called Alan. Asked repeatedly for Hannah.

Female Worker – Female spirit who worked at the venue. Happy we were communicating with her.

Connections Between Sessions:

Notably, Shelley's earlier Estes session in the Mayors Parlour referenced "hammer," "dagger," and "fireplace." Jo's later session upstairs independently mentioned a hammer being taken and something buried in the fire—suggesting these spirits and events may be connected.

Key Evidence:

  • Simultaneous table vibration across two separate heavy tables for ten minutes

  • Frankie motion sensor activation suggesting spirit ascending stairs

  • Cat ball inside glass moving independently of glass

  • Thermal imaging capturing severe temperature changes and unexplained light anomaly

  • Shelley pointing accurately whilst fully blindfolded

  • Footsteps heard at precise moment "footsteps" spoken during Estes

  • Shadow figures and feet observed in upstairs corridor

  • Multiple participants with no memory of Estes sessions

  • Cross-referenced information between separate Estes sessions (hammer, fireplace)

Overall: An exceptional investigation revealing multiple layers of spirit activity at Bitton House. The connection between the warning woman's fear, the angry man's presence, and the child spirit's terror of someone in the kitchen suggests an interlinked haunting with potentially dark historical roots. The corroboration of information across separate sessions—particularly regarding the hammer and fireplace—adds significant weight to the evidence gathered.

The team thanks all guests for their enthusiastic participation and bravery throughout the evening.
