History and Description of Area
The Arundel Jailhouse, situated beneath the Arundel Town Hall in West Sussex, is a historic subterranean structure dating back to 1836. Originally constructed as a Georgian/Victorian-era prison, it housed inmates convicted in the courtroom above, who were transferred directly to the jail via an underground passageway .
Entrance and Lobby: Accessed through a narrow lane called Duke’s Path, located between the Town House and the China Palace restaurant on Arundel High Street, visitors enter through an iron cell gate into a lobby that retains the austere ambiance of a 19th-century prison.
Cellular Structure: The jail comprises original prison cells, now repurposed as private booths for events. These cells feature authentic iron doors and Victorian brick flooring, preserving the historical integrity of the space.
Interior Design: The interior is characterized by low ceilings, uneven floors, and steps, reflecting its original penal design. The dense walls and high ceilings contribute to the venue's notable acoustics, making it suitable for live performances.
Underground Passageway: A distinctive feature is the underground corridor that historically connected the courtroom to the jail cells, facilitating the direct transfer of prisoners.

Investigation Report
Arrival & First Impressions
The iron door clanged shut behind us, sealing off the muted bustle of Arundel’s High Street. To our surprise, the great vaulted cellar lay in near-perfect silence: no music from the pub overhead, no traffic echoing through the vents—just the low hum of the emergency lights and the distant drip of groundwater somewhere in the chalk. We stowed our kit, set out refreshments, and followed the caretaker on a torch-lit tour. The jail comprises one large central hall (once the day room) with three brick-lined cells opening off it. At the far end, a narrow vestibule leads to the dreaded solitary confinement cell and a flight of original stone stairs—the very steps that felons once climbed to hear their sentences before trudging back down in chains.
Even before the lights were dimmed, soft shuffles and taps sounded from all directions, as if the building were clearing its throat for the night ahead.
Main Hall & Adjoining Cells
Human Pendulum Session
We formed a circle beneath the barrel vault and used the human pendulum, Spirit Box, and word-bank app simultaneously.
-
Subject 1 – “Richard” (cell 2)
-
Yes/No responses swung Maxine like a metronome. Richard identified himself as a man in his thirties, convicted of murder and executed on site. The air turned icy; K2 meters flickered in cell 3. Spirit-Box words “skirt,” “arch,” “universe” matched items or phrases in conversation, tightening the synchronicity. Richard admitted to being beaten but clammed up when asked about violence toward women. Moments later every guest complained of feeling clammy—the exact word that bled through the app before the presence dissolved.
-
-
Subject 2 – “Lucien”
Kate replaced Maxine. This energy refused any human gender and confessed—chillingly—to killing two of her own children after pregnancies forced on her “by a client.” The temperature plunged; several heard the faint roll of drums—a memory of an 1800s execution outside the castle walls. Spirit-Box spat out “demonic… always… tawdry,” and in the hush that followed, light footsteps circled us though no one moved.
Reverse Pendulum & Multiple Entities
Later, simultaneous answers suggested at least ten spirits watched from the shadows—some benign, others openly hostile. A nine-year-old orphan named Joseph tapped twice on request, while an unseen adult kicked guest Glen’s leg. Cell 3’s K2 repeatedly blazed to red whenever we referenced “Rose,” a wrongly accused woman desperate to escape both the jail and the malevolent presence she called “demon.”
Vestibule, Solitary Cell & Stone Stairs
The vestibule air felt heavy—as though generations of despair still clung to the lime-washed walls. Glen entered solitary with only a REM-Pod; the pod stayed mute, but Spirit-Box in the hall snapped out his name—“Glen”—twice. A frigid draft slithered around our ankles, followed by the unmistakable slam of a heavy iron door somewhere above, even though the pub was long-since locked.
When we tried the Estes method here, Kate felt compelled to lift her feet from the flagstones, certain something would grab them. Moments later a deep, guttural “Get out!” boomed through her headphones and the K2 in the hall spiked crimson.
Individual Cell Vigils
After the group investigation, each team conducted solo vigils in designated cells to further explore any paranormal presence and gather personal experiences.
Group A – Cell 1:
The investigator in Cell 1 reported hearing faint whispering sounds and experienced a noticeable temperature drop. They also saw a shadow briefly pass the doorway, even though no one else was nearby at the time.
Group B – Cell 2:
The individual in Cell 2 felt an intense pressure on their chest while sitting in the cell, describing the atmosphere as oppressive and uneasy. They also had the distinct sensation of being watched throughout the session, though no one was present.
Group C – Cell 3:
During their vigil in Cell 3, the participant used a spirit box and claimed to receive intelligent responses, including names and phrases that had previously come up during the group sessions, suggesting potential spirit recognition or communication.
Group D – Cell 4:
In Cell 4, the investigator heard what sounded like heavy footsteps pacing just outside the cell. Upon checking, they confirmed no one else was in the vicinity. These sounds were accompanied by fluctuating EMF readings on their K2 meter, suggesting possible spirit activity.
Communication Experiments
Glass-Divination
A brooding male called Jack slid the glass straight to Kate, confessed hatred for another guest, and boasted of harming her in life. “Bobby” followed, pleading to shield us from someone darker.
Ouija
One board delivered chaotic initials—V H, M W—and even tugged Glen’s trousers. On a fresh board, a wry spirit spelled “NOT FUNNY” when we joked about prison cuisine, then called us “pathetic” before naming itself Deb Glew. The planchette finally stalled, an uneasy silence settling over the wood.
Table-Tipping
At first a gentle rock, then a violent lurch that sent the three-legged table crashing onto its side. On the final attempt the tabletop skated in a slow circle, like a compass seeking north.
Auditory Phenomena
-
Repeated three-knock patterns answered on request.
-
Two thunderous metallic bangs—identical to cell doors—echoed from the sealed floor above.
-
Disembodied breaths: once inside Cell 2, again in the main hall.
-
Guests and investigators alike heard a prolonged, childlike “weeeeeee” cascading through the corridors.
Environmental & Physical Effects
-
Sudden shifts from stifling heat to razor-sharp cold.
-
Multiple guests reported numb or tingling limbs, especially inside the circle.
-
Shadow figure observed crossing the far wall of Cell 1.
-
Consistent K2 escalation to red in Cell 3 at moments of heightened dialogue.
Conclusion
The Arundel Jailhouse proved electrically active, both technologically and sensorially. The main hall acted as a crossroads where spirits jockeyed for attention: Richard the condemned murderer, Lucien the rage-filled infanticide, Joseph the orphan boy, Rose the unjustly hanged, and the malevolent Jack who stalked Kate from glass to board to cell. Stone, iron, and centuries of sorrow still resonate here; out of that crucible rose intelligent, reactive phenomena—footsteps, knocks, door-slams, temperature plunges, and chilling vocal commands—that none of us will soon forget.
We left the jail at 03:30, the streetlamp glow outside never more welcome.
